Reading a bracelet by its motif

What you see from across a room is the motif. That is where most people start. A tree of life, cut as an openwork disc, still reads at arm's length; a star gives a sharper outline; a treble clef pulls the shape lengthways where a heart rounds it off. Some carry a small rhinestone-set ball.

Not all equally common

Trees of life outnumber the rest, usually as an openwork disc. Stars follow, then treble clefs and hearts. None of them dominates.

Rigid, steel cable or elastic

Most of the range is rigid: the motif hangs from a ring that holds its curve and eases apart to let the hand through. Fewer use a flexible steel cable and a magnetic clasp, quicker to fasten one-handed. The beaded elastic ones are the Christmas designs.

Sizing

Measure your wrist without pulling the tape tight, then compare it with the figure shown. On a rigid piece, the gap at the opening matters as much as the circumference; on a cable or elastic piece, total length counts. A photograph tells you about the finish and nothing about the fit.

Other shapes on the wrist

If one wide band appeals more than several small pieces, look at the faux leather and metal styles that wrap the wrist. A cleaner outline, with nothing hanging, comes instead from a thin, unadorned ring.

Keeping the charms in view

Lay the bracelet flat once you take it off, so the charms do not catch on anything. During the day, a sleeve that stops short of the wrist keeps them visible. A soft dry cloth handles everyday cleaning.
