Manual, semi-automatic or automatic: what changes in the rain

All three keep you equally dry. What differs is the gesture you make stepping off a bus with a bag already in one hand. Manual models have the least to go wrong: you push the runner up the shaft yourself. Semi-automatic ones open at the press of a button and close by hand, which is why they are the most common compromise. Fully automatic models do both at the button, and that matters when only one hand is free.

Living with a folding umbrella

A folding shaft comes in several sections, so the whole thing drops into a city bag and slides back into its sleeve. A full-length walking umbrella never does. The trade-off is that it hates being packed away soaking wet. Let the canopy dry open before you fold it and you avoid set-in creases and the musty smell that follows them.
