Where a hand fan earns its place
A summer wedding is the obvious one: an outdoor ceremony, a drinks reception in full sun, a church that holds the heat. It also works on a restaurant terrace, on the train home in July, or in a theatre with no air conditioning. Open-carved wood or printed fabric
Both fans share a natural wood frame. The difference sits in the leaf. On the carved model there is no fabric at all: the pattern is fretted straight into the wood, light passes through it, and the whole piece stays very light in the hand. On the printed model, fabric is stretched across the ribs and holds a flat block of colour, here white spots on black.

Opening it without straining the ribs
Hold the base of the frame between thumb and forefinger and let the wrist do the work in one smooth sweep. Forcing the leaf open from the outer edge is what loosens the ribs over time. Closing follows the same logic: gather the sticks back together rather than pressing them flat.
Keeping a wooden hand fan in good shape
Store it closed and flat, somewhere dry. Wood dislikes damp and long spells in direct sun, which dulls the tone. Dust the carved model with a soft brush.
