The hair clip is the most versatile accessory in any beauty drawer: it goes on in two seconds, holds a strand or half a hairstyle, and instantly shifts the mood of an outfit. Our edit focuses on the fashion-forward side, designed for quick everyday wear as much as for dressed-up moments. The intent isn't to stock pro salon clips, but pieces that show, add a flash of colour or pattern, and stay within reach price-wise.
A hair clip has one edge that crocodile clamps, headbands and scrunchies don't share: it sits exactly where you want the accent. Wear one on the side to free an ear, two in symmetry for a polished look, or three lined up for an evening theme. It works on short and long hair, and on every style from down to half-up to a high ponytail. To compare with the rest of the range, see our parent hair page.
The range is deliberately fashion-forward, not jewellery. Finishes lean on light metal, resin, crystal and pearl detailing, in soft palettes as well as bolder pops. Pieces come either individually or in mixed-set form, so you have enough variety to swap with outfits. On mechanisms, the line covers the classics: spring clip for a firm hold, snap clip, claw clip. Nothing requires a stylist's skill, the brief is that they work straight away.
Three uses dominate: to frame the face (one clip on a side strand or a swept fringe), to structure a half-up (above the elastic to hide the join, or to one side as decoration), and to liven up a ponytail (two clips staggered above the bobble). For an evening, three matching clips lined up above the ear delivers a strong polished effect on smooth long hair.
Small clips (3-5 cm) suit fine strands, children's hair or a discreet accent. Medium clips (6-9 cm) cover most adult uses. Larger clips (10 cm and over) hold a half-head, ideal for thicker hair.
Fashion clips don't love prolonged humidity or hard knocks. Avoid keeping them loose in a jeans pocket or rattling in a bag without a pouch. Store them in a fabric pouch or a small compartmented organiser to protect crystal trims and painted metal. A regular wipe with a soft cloth keeps the shine; for stains, lukewarm soapy water in minimal quantity, never alcohol or solvent.
To browse the other fixings, our hair page groups: hair clamps for thicker sections, headbands to clear the front, scrunchies for soft mark-free ties. Each family serves a specific job, and it's common to layer two in the same look.
The main mechanisms are: spring (snap) clip with a metal spring, crocodile or claw clip, U-pin with a decorated top, barrette with internal spring, and bobby pin for invisible hold. Each suits a different amount of hair.
Hair clips put less repeated tension on the same strand than an elastic band, so they're gentler in everyday use. They also don't leave the kink mark that a tight elastic does. The trade-off is that they hold less hair, so for a thick ponytail you'll still want an elastic underneath.
