A winged heart locket necklace that opens at the side

The hinge runs down the left edge of the heart, so the pendant swings open and clicks shut. Half open, it shows the depth of the heart: the outline stays, the character changes. When it is closed, only a fine line along the side gives the mechanism away. Nothing else does.

Navy glitter under a silver-tone rim

The centre is domed and holds fine navy glitter that catches the light without a hard sparkle. A silver-tone rim follows the curve of the heart, then runs out into two symmetrical wings. Engraved lines across each wing suggest feathers, and each wing starts from a small silver-tone bead set against the edge of the heart.

Wearing it on its beaded chain

The beaded chain picks up those two beads and repeats them to the nape, so the necklace keeps to a single idea from front to back. A plain rectangular bail and jump ring hold the pendant, deliberately understated, leaving all the room to the heart. The navy and the silver read clearly against a dark top, a shirt collar or a plain jumper.

Looking after the side hinge

Shut the heart before you put the necklace away and lay the chain flat rather than winding it round the pendant. Open it from the edges and never force the front: the hinge takes the strain. Put the necklace on after perfume and cream, take it off before you shower, and wipe the silver-tone surfaces with a soft cloth to lift fingermarks. Keep it apart from your other pieces so the rim does not pick up scratches, and it travels perfectly well in a soft pouch.
