Our end-of-line earrings selection

How the earrings clearance sale fills up

A clearance rail is not curated the way a collection is. Pairs arrive because a line has ended or a colourway has thinned out, not because they belong together. That makes browsing by theme fairly pointless. Browsing by finish, by length or by colour gets you somewhere much faster.

Three finishes do most of the work

Look past the shapes for a moment and the rail sorts itself into a small number of metal finishes. Silver tone dominates, sometimes deliberately antiqued so the recesses read darker. Gold tone comes next, warmer against olive and deeper skin tones. Then there is dark metal, usually matt black, often cut into openwork patterns.

What each finish tends to sit well with
FinishReads asEasiest pairing
Silver toneCool and quiet, brighter when polished.Denim, grey and navy knitwear.
Antiqued silverShadowed detail, older-looking surface.Linen, earth colours, folk-influenced pieces.
Gold toneWarm, and it lifts a dull day.Cream, camel, rust and forest green.
Dark metalGraphic outline rather than shine.Black tailoring, white shirts.

Colour decides more than shape

Strong colour runs right through this rail: turquoise, red, orange, violet, bottle green, plus the softer creams and greys of the beadwork. On a full-price shelf you would pick a shape first and worry about colour later. Here it works the other way round, because a bold colourway is the thing you cannot swap for another. Start from an outfit you actually wear, then find the pair that answers it.

What to check before a last-chance buy

Two things are worth a second look. The first is weight against length: a long drop in solid metal pulls on the lobe after a few hours, while an openwork piece of the same size disappears. The second is length against hair, since a fine drop vanishes under anything shoulder-length. Openwork leaves, flowers, feathers and tassels also swing as you walk, so leave those aside on days when you would rather keep things quiet.

Carrying the search further

If nothing here fits, the full range of pairs still held in the main catalogue covers the same shapes in colours that are restocked.

To skip straight to the lengths that hang below the lobe, the dedicated selection of styles that fall along the neck is the quicker route.

And if the search widens to necklaces, rings and bracelets that have also left the collections, the parent department gathers every end-of-line piece in one place.
