What women's accessories are really for

An accessory earns its place when it does one job well. A square scarf covers a plain neckline, a brooch fixes a coat lapel that keeps falling open, a belt stops a dress from swamping the waist. Start from the gap in the outfit rather than the trend, and the choice gets much easier.

The range is arranged so that each sub-category answers one of those gaps. Squares and printed scarves are the most flexible starting point, since the same piece works at the neck, in the hair or round a bag handle.

Magnetic brooches and why knitwear likes them

Most of our brooches fasten with a magnet rather than a pin, so they sit on a coat, a fine knit or a scarf without piercing the cloth. That solves the usual problem with lambswool and anything loosely woven, where a pin leaves a mark you cannot brush out. The subjects run from animals and insects to flowers, hearts and tree-of-life motifs, so there is something with real character to choose rather than a plain metal pin.

Winter pieces that actually get worn

British winters ask a lot of an accessory. A snood goes on in one movement and stays put on a windy platform, while a large square scarf can be draped loosely indoors and folded tightly outside. Gloves and mittens split the same way: mittens hold the fingers together and trap heat far better, while gloves leave you able to grip a phone or a set of keys.

A neutral shade comes back out year after year, while a strong colour tends to stay in the drawer, waiting for the one or two outfits it happens to match. Buy the loud print for the piece you actually want people to notice, and keep the everyday layer plain enough to pair with it.
