Where the tile-print panel sits on this backpack

Start at the right-hand side and follow it round: the printed grid of small tiles wraps from the side seam across the entire back panel. Each tile is its own little square, framed by a loose white outline, in cream, grey, terracotta and blue. It reads like a wall of old ceramic tiles rather than a repeated motif. Next to it sits the teal faux leather with a marbled grain, and above both, a tan band that carries on into the handle. A teal that leans green in daylight

The blue is dark and a little dusty. Under a window it drifts towards green, and in a shop light it settles back to navy. The tan band behaves the same way: paler at the corners, deeper through the middle. That is why the two sit together so easily instead of competing.

The café scene printed on the front pocket

The zipped front pocket carries the whole picture. A girl in a pale blue sun hat stands with her hand out, long raspberry hair falling over a white dress and a denim jacket knotted at the waist. Behind everything, a cream background printed to look like a handwritten page.

Handle, clip-on strap and the two D-rings

The lid opens on an arched zip with bronze-tone metal teeth. The short handle is fixed to a topstitched tab that also holds a D-ring on the back face. The strap adjusts on a slider and unhooks at both ends, and two more D-rings are sewn low on the back. A full-width zipped pocket runs across the back, and a small charm with a pale green ribbon hangs from the right-hand clip. Swap the strap and the bag changes character: try a brighter length of woven strap.

A damp cloth, and always along the grain

A soft cloth, barely damp, is enough. Wipe along the grain rather than in circles so the teal does not dry with a ring on it. The printed panel takes the same treatment, though it is worth staying off the white outlines around each tile. Dry the metal parts after rain rather than leaving them to air.
