Look at it from directly above

Why does a bag this plain still catch the eye on a shelf? Photograph it from the top and the answer shows up straight away. Three separate planes stack up front to back: the flap overhangs everything, the brown patch pockets sit proud of the body below it, and the black shell carries both. Nothing here is printed or embossed; the relief is structural.

Three planes, one shadow line

That stacking is also why the white stitching reads so clearly. It follows the top edge of each plane, so on a black shell you see the outline before you see the panel. The cream cross-stitch along the flap does the opposite job, filling its border with small crossed threads instead of drawing a line.

The flap is held by two brown tabs, each closing on a round brass-tone press stud, so it lifts with one pull rather than unbuckling. The two oval buckles below them tighten nothing at all and are there for the look. Brass-tone D-rings carry the brown top handle, and a matching ring sits on each side tab for a longer strap. If carrying it by hand matters more to you than anything else, the shelf where the top handle decides everything is worth a look first.

What it holds, and what it doesn't

At 27x7.50x18 cm the depth is the figure to look at. Seven and a half centimetres takes a slim notebook and a phone lying flat; a wide bottle standing upright is out of the question. The main compartment is one undivided space, so anything small goes in the two brown pockets or in the full-width zipped pocket on the back. That back pocket is the one you can reach with the flap still shut.
