    This one goes on without any fiddling. The band is an expander, flat links threaded onto an internal spring, so it stretches over the hand and settles back on its own. No buckle, no clasp, no hunting for the right hole.

    The dial is plain, a warm brown that turns almost dusty pink indoors, with black hands and a slim seconds hand over a black inner ring. The 40 mm case is silver-tone and round, and the band matches the dial exactly.

    Pull it on and go: the expander band

    Flat links sitting shoulder to shoulder, threaded onto an internal spring. You open the band with both hands, slip it over your knuckles and let it close. That is the whole operation, and it takes about a second. Anyone who takes a watch off at a desk, at the gym or at the kitchen sink several times a day will notice the difference straight away, because there is no clasp to fasten.

    Sizing: which wrists it fits

    It fits wrists from 15 to 21 cm, which covers most of them without a trip to a jeweller to have links taken out.     Ernest has stripped the dial back to what a watch is for. There are no numerals and no date window, and nothing written across the face: only two black hands, a seconds hand and a fine minute track on a black inner ring. Warmer than a leather strap's brown, it reads close to terracotta in strong light and closer to dusty pink indoors. The band carries the same shade.

    Wearing it

    A plain dial sits quietly under a shirt cuff and reads at a glance, which is rather the point. It works through a day at a desk, goes unnoticed next to a thin bangle, and does not compete with a printed blouse the way a busy dial would.

    Looking after it

    Run a dry, soft cloth between the links now and again to lift the dust that settles there. Open the band with both hands rather than pulling from one side, which is what tires a spring. Nothing more than a microfibre cloth is needed for the mineral glass. As for the 3 ATM water resistance, it covers splashes and rain, not a shower or a swim.
