Inside a 28 x 24 x 11 cm striped handbag

Those measurements put it in daytime territory: room for a purse, a phone and a slim notebook, without the bulk of a tote. The top handles are short, rounded and covered in navy faux leather, fixed to the body by tabs with metal loops, so your forearm slips through easily. Metal rings sit on both sides and continue the line of those tabs. Inside, a burgundy lining lifts the navy while a zipped divider splits the space.

Canvas on one side, plain navy on the other

The front is split into two halves. Woven canvas carries narrow navy and off-white stripes, close together and even; next to it sits plain navy faux leather with a matt surface. Where do the two meet? On a diagonal seam that crosses the bag corner to corner and gives it a slightly tapered outline. Turn it round and the pattern swaps sides. Seen from the side, the gusset is striped from top to bottom.

The mustard pouch on the handle

A small envelope pouch in mustard faux leather hangs from one handle by a short strap and closes with a metal press stud. It detaches. Card-sized, it will take a travel pass or an office badge, and it is the only warm note in an otherwise navy and off-white bag.

It sits well next to raw denim

Navy and off-white sit easily alongside raw denim, linen and cream. The stripe is fine enough to read almost as a solid colour from a distance, so a bold print elsewhere in the outfit will compete with it rather than set it off. Come autumn, camel and marl grey take over from cream. If size matters more than colour, you can compare volumes across the other short-handled styles before deciding.

Damp cloth first, soft brush second

Each surface needs its own treatment. Wipe the faux leather with a soft, barely damp cloth, then dry it straight away. The striped canvas needs more patience: a soft brush worked along the stripes, and mild soap dabbed onto a mark rather than rubbed in, so the off-white does not pick up the navy.
