Straw basket bag, round boho shape for the beach and the market
A round straw basket does one job brilliantly: it sits upright while you fill it. Ours are woven from natural plaited straw, trimmed with lace, pom-poms, shells and little wooden charms, and measure roughly 39 cm across, so a towel, a paperback and Saturday's shopping all go in. The closed, upright circular shape is what sets them apart from the longer straw shoulder bags. A seasonal range: it opens in spring and runs until the last warm evenings of September.

Basket bag or tote: which shape suits you
Shape decides almost everything here. A round basket keeps its form on sand, on a pub table, in a car boot; a soft tote folds in on itself the moment you set it down. Standard sizes run from small lunch baskets of 20-25 cm in diameter up to market baskets of 30-40 cm, holding somewhere around 5-10 litres. Ours sit at the generous end. If you would rather carry something long over the shoulder, the softer straw styles are next door.

From the farmers' market to the seafront
The middle size of 25-30 cm is the all-rounder; ours are wider, which suits market stalls and beach huts rather than a crowded train. In town, a round basket lifts a plain linen dress or jeans without trying too hard. Come autumn it earns its keep on a shelf, holding scarves instead of strawberries.
Looking after straw baskets in a damp climate
Straw minds damp far more than sun, which matters rather a lot in Britain. Caught in a shower, let it dry flat in open air, never with a hairdryer: hot air makes the fibre brittle. A soft brush lifts sand and dust; blot a mark with a barely damp cloth and dry it straight away. Stored somewhere airy, stuffed with tissue paper, it keeps its round shape for years. How much actually fits inside?
A beach towel, sun cream, a bottle of water and a book, or a market run of fruit, veg and a loaf. A laptop will not go in, and a baguette will stick out of the top.
Is it a summer-only bag?
Mostly, yes. Straw reads as warm weather, and the shape is at its best with lighter clothes. Out of season it works indoors as storage.
How do I stop it losing its shape?
Do not fold it, keep it out of direct sunlight and damp rooms, and fill it loosely when you put it away.
