    Two browns run through this Systyle Paris satchel: a warm cognac across the flap and the body, a darker shade on the straps, the pockets and the trim. A cream cross-stitch lacing follows the whole edge of the flap, picking up the same thread used for the topstitching, while the buckles, the rivets and the rings are finished in aged brass.

    It is a small bag with a firm outline, 27x7.50x18 cm, carried by the top handle or by the strap that clips off at both ends. Two patch pockets sit at the front and a zipped pocket runs across the back.

    A vintage brown satchel bag that holds its shape

    Where a slouchy shoulder bag folds in on itself, this one keeps its outline: flat sides, defined corners, a flap that comes down over the front pockets and two vertical straps buckled across it. The faux leather is shaded rather than flat, lighter where the panels curve and deeper in the creases. That is what gives the brown a worn-in look on a bag that is new.

    What 27x7.50x18 cm feels like to wear

    At 7.50 cm deep it stays close to a coat instead of swinging out at the hip. It also measures 18 cm tall and 27 cm across, so it is wider than it is high, and the two front pockets sit side by side across it. Each one closes with a magnetic press stud and opens with one hand, while the main compartment stays shut behind a zip of its own. The back pocket zips as well and stays within reach while the bag is worn across the body.

    Cream cross-stitch and aged brass

    The lacing is the detail worth looking at. A cream thread crosses from edge to edge all the way round the flap, like a braid sewn into the seam, and the same thread comes back as topstitching along the panels and the straps. Next to it, the buckles, the rivets on the strap tabs and the side rings all read as a dulled, slightly darkened gold rather than a bright one.

    Top handle, long strap, or neither

    The handle is mounted on two rings above the flap, which is all you need to carry it in the hand. Two D-rings on the sides take the strap supplied with the bag: clips at one end, a slide buckle at the other. Leave the strap off and the satchel behaves like a small top-handle bag; clip it back on and it belongs with the other flap-front satchels.

    Brown this warm sits easily beside camel, cream and olive, and it still reads clearly against navy.
