Two studs, and the flap stays put

With the rounded flap raised, the fastening turns out to be plainer than the front suggests. Two brass press studs sit on the camel pocket, one under each side of the flap, and the bag is shut before the hand leaves it. The buckled straps on either side and the strap with the pointed metal tip in the middle stay where they are; nobody has to undo three fittings to reach a phone. That is the trick of this shape: it looks like a bag you have to unbuckle, and it is not.

Behind the flap, the main compartment runs on a zip across the top. The back of the bag holds a second closure, a flat zipped pocket set horizontally, for the card or the ticket you want to reach without opening anything. The strap clips onto two rings fixed high on the sides, so it comes off in a second and the short top handle takes over. Nothing here asks for two hands. What makes it read as vintage

Four things do the work. The flap is cut as a curve rather than a square, which is what old-school bags did and modern ones rarely do. The buckles are rectangular and unpolished, in a brass tone that has been knocked back rather than brightened. The straps are stitched in a brown that does not match the camel, much as leather parts used to age at different rates.
