    The top of this handbag closes on a zip that runs the whole opening, so nothing sits exposed on a crowded train. Below it, the front is broken into four grey surfaces, each with its own weave, and a second zip cuts across them on the slant.

    The back keeps out of that argument altogether: one plain panel, one flat pocket. Inside, a printed lining brightens the bottom of the bag.

    Start at the top, because that is what you use first. The zip runs the full width, which rules out the quick one-handed dip you get with a magnetic tab, and rules in a bag you can put down without watching it. Nothing here is stiff: laid flat, the sides fold in on themselves, so the shape you see is the shape of whatever you packed that morning.

    The front is broken up, the back is not

    Colour barely shifts, so the interest is all in the surface. A finely woven band takes the top, a paler speckled triangle sits to the left, a smooth faintly clouded panel holds the base, and raised plaited ribs finish the right-hand side. The back drops all of it for a single unbroken face, with one flat zipped pocket set across it, gunmetal to match the eyelets.
