    Rigid enough to stand on its own, this Gallantry bucket bag measures 24 x 26 cm and is carried by a short top handle, in the hand or over the wrist. A drawcord threaded through two gold eyelets closes the neck.

    The black is matt and finely ribbed, so texture rather than colour gives the bag its character. A printed scarf, tied at the handle, supplies the only gold and grey on it, and comes off whenever plain black suits better.

    How this bucket bag carries at 24 x 26 cm

    At 24 x 26 cm the bag sits mid-range: room for what you carry on a normal day, without the bulk that starts to pull on the arm. The base is rectangular and flat, so the bag stands up on a desk or a floor instead of folding over. Four gold-toned studs are screwed underneath and lift it a couple of millimetres clear of whatever it is set down on. The handle is short and firm, made for the hand or the crook of the elbow.

    A ribbed black finish that stays matt

    The front is worked with fine vertical ribs that catch the light without throwing it back. Black runs even from the neck down to the base, and the texture does the job that colour would do on another bag. Seen from the side, the body widens a little towards the top before dropping onto the flat base.

    Gold eyelets, base studs and the drawcord

    Two gold-toned eyelets sit either side of the neck and take a drawcord with two knotted ends. Pull it and the opening closes in one movement, with no clip or magnet to find. The same gold finish returns where the handle is fixed and on the four studs underneath, so the metalwork stays consistent.

    The printed scarf, and the bag without it

    The scarf is tied at the base of the handle. Its print sets chains, braid and rope motifs in gold against black, white and pale grey panels, in the style of a printed scarf square. It is the only colour anywhere on the bag. Untie it and you are left with plain black, which reads as a different bag for a different day.

    Wearing plain black through the week

    Keeping the ribs clean

    A soft cloth, barely damp, lifts marks off the coating; run it along the ribs rather than across them so nothing settles in the grooves. The scarf unties and is cleaned separately. Loosen the drawcord before the bag is put away and the neck keeps its shape better.
