A 31x27cm black handbag with a strapped front flap

The whole front panel is given over to one wide flap, kept in place by two straps and silver-tone rivets. Lift it and you find two patch pockets, each finished with its own riveted tab and set side by side under the flap. Nothing here is decorative for the sake of it: the straps do the closing, the rivets take the strain at the points that get pulled the most.

The side zip for whatever you reach for first

Along the left edge, a short zip with a pull tab opens a compartment of its own. Because it sits at hand height while the bag hangs, it is the sensible place for keys or a travel card, away from everything that ends up loose in the main section. That main section closes at the top, where the panels gather into soft folds instead of a rigid frame.

Carrying it: two handles that adjust at the buckle

The two adjustable handles thread through silver-tone metal rings and shorten or lengthen at a buckle on each side. Shortened, the bag sits neatly in the hand; let them out and it settles into the crook of the elbow. The rings are open at the top corners, so the handles swing with the bag instead of sitting fixed in one position.

Styling a black bag through a British autumn

Black and silver hardware ask very little of the rest of the outfit, which is why this shape survives the months when the coat never quite comes off. A charcoal blazer and ankle boots make it read smart; a grey marl jumper and dark denim pull it back towards the weekend.
