    This satchel shuts twice. The two brown tabs press closed over the front pockets, and under the flap the main compartment has a zip of its own. A third zip crosses the back panel.

    Navy blue covers the flap, the sides and the back; chocolate brown is kept for the handle, the tabs and the two patch pockets, with cream cross-stitch along the flap edge. The shoulder strap unclips from the side rings and adjusts. 27x7.50x18 cm.

    A vintage blue and brown satchel bag that closes twice

    Most flap bags rely on the flap alone. This one does not. Lift the flap and the main compartment still has a zip running the full width of the opening, so nothing tips out when the tabs are left undone. That single extra fastening is what separates a bag you can carry on a crowded train from one you keep an arm over.

    The zip you only see once the flap is up

    It sits just below the flap hinge and follows the top edge of the body, and its pull is a small navy tab rather than metal. Closed, only that tab shows at the edge. The flap can then hang loose all day and the bag still behaves like a zipped everyday bag, which is not how a satchel usually works.

    Leaving the tabs undone

    The two brown tabs are the slow part of the design: each one passes under its buckle and presses shut on a stud set into the pocket below. Skip them and you lose nothing but the look, because the zip has already done the work. The two front pockets keep their own studs, so small items stay reachable without lifting anything. The what else sits on the handbag shelf are worth comparing if a short handle suits you better than a strap.

    A satchel for a short commute

    The navy reads as neutral next to grey and camel, while the brown handle keeps the bag from looking like office issue. It is the sort of piece picked up for a morning out rather than a whole day away, which is when a structured flap bag is easiest to live with. If you would rather have the weight on your shoulder than in your hand, the longer straps on the next shelf cover the same ground with a longer strap.
