Our amethyst bracelet selection brings together bracelets in the most iconic purple stone of crystal healing, polished beads on stretch elastic for everyday wear. A purple variety of quartz (SiO2) coloured by iron traces and natural gamma irradiation, amethyst is among the oldest stones used in jewellery: Egyptian amulets, Mesopotamian seals, medieval bishop's rings, and most famously the British Crown Jewels (amethyst features in several pieces of the Coronation Regalia kept at the Tower of London). Its name comes from Greek « amethystos » (not drunken) referring to the ancient belief that it protected against intoxication.
Amethyst is a variety of crystalline quartz (SiO2) whose characteristic purple colour comes from iron traces (Fe3+) combined with exposure to natural radioactivity (gamma rays) over millions of years. Its palette ranges from pale lavender (the variety known as « Rose de France ») to deep intense purple (Uruguayan and Bahian amethyst, the most prized). Main deposits are in Brazil (Rio Grande do Sul, Bahia, the world's leading producer), Uruguay (Artigas, considered the quality reference), Zambia, Madagascar, Russia (Urals), and historically in Cornwall and Devon (small native British sources, prized by Victorian collectors). Its Mohs hardness (7) makes it a durable stone perfectly suited to everyday bracelets. To browse the wider universe of energy stones, see our crystal healing bracelets section.
In Britain, amethyst has a unique royal heritage: it features in St Edward's Crown (the official coronation crown of British monarchs since 1661, kept at the Tower of London), in the Imperial State Crown, and in numerous pieces of Queen Victoria's personal jewellery collection now at the Royal Collection. Beyond royalty, amethyst is the historic bishop's stone (English and Anglican bishops traditionally wear amethyst pastoral rings, a symbol of purity and clarity of mind dating to medieval canon law). In the contemporary New Age revival from the 1970s onwards, amethyst became the No. 1 crystal sold by British retailers (Holistic Shop, The Psychic Tree, Cwsellors, Joma Jewellery, Abiza), consistently topping the bestsellers at every Mind Body Spirit fair in London, Manchester and Bristol. Amethyst is also the official birthstone for February in the British and American gemological tradition. Our selection fits this accessible tradition: natural polished beads, fair pricing, controlled sourcing.
Amethyst comes in several visually distinct shades: lavender amethyst (pale purple, called « Rose de France », more delicate), intense amethyst (deep purple, the most prized), Uruguayan amethyst (quality reference with red flashes under certain angles), Brazilian amethyst (medium purple, the most widespread commercially), bicolour ametrine (purple and yellow zones in the same bead, naturally formed). The bracelet comes mainly in polished round beads (6 mm calibre for a discreet silhouette, 8 mm for a balanced presence, 10 mm for a boho statement) threaded on stretch elastic. For chromatic pairings, purple amethyst pairs naturally with yellow-orange stones in complementary harmony; see our carnelian section for the amethyst + carnelian combo balancing soothing (purple) and energy (orange), particularly appreciated by meditation practitioners.
In traditional lithotherapy (note: symbolic wellbeing approach, not medical advice), amethyst is associated with the crown chakra (Sahasrara) and the third eye (Ajna). Considered the stone of serenity, spirituality, peaceful sleep and sobriety, it is traditionally worn to calm mental agitation, favour deep sleep (place on the bedside table), accompany meditation and support introspection work. Classic pairings recommend combining it with clear quartz (amplify mental clarity), with rose quartz (strengthen emotional soothing), or with blue sodalite (intensify intellectual dimension and authentic communication).
A common UK question: which wrist? For amethyst, a stone of soothing and spirituality, the left wrist is traditionally preferred (receptive side, receive serenity energy). The right wrist suits projecting soothing outward (stressful professional situations, family conflicts). Care: amethyst is durable (Mohs 7) and tolerates water and the occasional shower. Recharge on an amethyst geode (self-regenerating effect) or under moonlight. Absolutely avoid prolonged sun exposure which can fade the purple colour over time (amethyst is photosensitive). For more discreet lithotherapy supports, see also our lithotherapy earrings.
Natural amethyst shows slightly irregular colouring (lighter and darker zones within the same bead), sometimes visible natural inclusions (frostings, phantoms), and a coolness to the touch characteristic of quartz. Purple glass imitations show a colour too uniform, internal air bubbles visible with a magnifying glass, and warm quickly in the hand. Synthetic hydrothermal amethyst exists but is rare and costs almost as much as natural. By weight, the stone is denser than glass.
Yes without restriction, except long sun exposure. With Mohs 7 hardness, it is a robust stone that handles daily wear, shower water and moderate sport. Remove for swimming pool (harsh chlorine) and prolonged beach (intense sun + sea salt). Recharge once a month on an amethyst geode or under moonlight.
Probably the most-gifted crystal bracelet in the UK, particularly suited to: Christmas, Valentine's Day (the stone of loving serenity), Mother's Day, February birthdays (Aquarius and Pisces birthstone), housewarming gift, support for someone going through an anxious period. 6-8 mm calibre in medium purple for a universal gift.
