A structured monogram handbag that stands on four metal studs

Turn the bag over and the base explains the shape. It is a plain dark panel carrying four gold studs at the corners, and the sides that rise from it stay upright with nothing inside to hold them. That is the difference between a bag you can set down mid-sentence and one that folds over as soon as you let go. From across a room you see three things: a pale block, a dark block, and a pair of huge initials laid over the join. Come closer and a second print appears, far smaller, repeating those same two letters in rows so regular they read as texture rather than as type. The large initials ignore the join entirely, which is why one leg of a letter can be dark against the pale side and pale against the dark one. The gold Gallantry plate sits above all of it, a little right of centre.

Gold fittings, a short chain and a fan of flat straps

The hardware is the one place where this bag lets itself be noticed. A short chain hangs from the left handle, ends in a ring, and carries a fan of flat black straps pinned to a tab by a single rivet; it swings while you walk, which nothing else here does. The handles themselves are gripped at the base by tubular gold collars, riveted through, and the same gold reappears at the side rings where the strap clips on.

A handle drop of 17 cm suits the hand or the crook of the arm, and the front at 34x24cm keeps the whole thing in front of you rather than beside you. The strap detaches, but it comes in one length only, with no slider and no buckle along it, so for wearing a bag over a thick jumper look instead at the straps long enough to clear a coat.

Looking after the pale side of the print

The dark half of the bag forgives almost everything. The pale half does not, and it is the half that faces your clothes when the bag sits against you. Raw denim, a damp coat sleeve and a dark scarf are the three things that move colour onto a light ground, usually along the lower corner where the bag rubs. Wipe that corner with a dry cloth on the day it happens rather than a week later, and the small letters stay readable.
