Hold a hand up and you see the pattern: interlocking frames and filled squares, a few small diamonds, laid out so that no two fingers repeat exactly the same block. Fine bright dots run along some of the frames and catch the light as the hand turns. Turn the hand over and all of it stops. From the palm side these read as plain black gloves, nothing more.

The side that shows, the side that grips

That split is practical as much as decorative. The palm, the underside of the fingers and the band around the wrist are plain black suede-effect velvet with no print, which is the surface that meets a handbag strap, a steering wheel or a shopping bag. The printed face, the one people actually look at, never touches any of it. A black edging follows the outer line of the fingers and the outline of the hand, so the two faces stay clearly separated even when the gloves have been worn all winter.

Getting them on and keeping them on

There is no fastening and no gusset to fiddle with. The cuff is short and cut straight, stopping at the wrist, so it slides under a coat sleeve without bunching. The fabric does the rest of the work: polyester and elastane, 10% elastane, enough give for the glove to open over a wider hand and close again on a narrow one. That is what the one-size-fits-all cut relies on.

The whole inside is faced with a velvet lining, so the hand meets a soft surface rather than seam allowances.

Wearing them through a cold week

Because the print is busy, everything else can be quiet: a plain black, camel or grey coat, and the hands become the one piece of colour in the outfit.
