Where these butterfly sunglasses sit widest

Start with the corners and work inwards from there. The upper edge rises steadily from the bridge out towards the temples, the lower rim drops away on a slant, and the angle where they meet is what gives the pair its width. Over the nose the frame thins to almost nothing, the one place on the whole pair where it disappears. Lower down, the rim turns pink and lets enough light through to read as translucent rather than solid.

The tint in the lenses is top-heavy in the same way: densest violet-grey along the upper half, directly above the eye line, thinning out as it drops. The pale sand of the surround sits lighter than anything behind the lens, which makes the tint look deeper than it measures. Temples that stop short of the colour

Nothing of the sand or the pink carries past the hinge. The temples are a milky off-white, barely tinted green, flat and broad end to end, with a small silver hinge where the two parts meet. Seen from the side, then, this is a far quieter frame than it looks when you meet it head on.

Pale corners and the necklines that carry them

A translucent pink needs quiet company. Put a busy print next to it and the tint drops out of the picture altogether. Plain, dusty colours do far better, and an open neckline helps, because the pale temples then read as part of a run of light tones rather than an interruption. Black is the easy case, since the whole front then reads as one pale block. A scarf in the same muted range gives the pink somewhere lower down to sit.
